Blog post #2

My final decision for my topic is naps and the sleeping habits of college students.                                             Image result for college napsImage result for nap gif

Image result for som sleepI started with social media since that is the most widely used platform in the world, especially by college students. On Instagram, the hashtag #naps led me to a lot of videos of animals sleeping, and some posts about new parents and college students.

One page, @get.some.sleep shares posts that promote including the right amount of sleep in a healthy lifestyle through their merchandise. Another page, @getsomsleep shares posts that promote its beverage, Som Sleep, which is supposed to help people "take their sleep to the next level".

The focus from these sources seemed to be getting the most sleep and best sleep as possible. Instead of deciding over quantity versus quality, they were saying, "why not combine both?" Apparently, on Instagram, when the topic of sleep comes up, its usually that we don;t get enough of it.

Another big source I found online was the National Sleep Foundation's online website. Their mission is to improve health and well-being through sleep education and advocacy. They recently completed a study that took over two years to complete and resulted in the chart below:

This source focuses on the idea that sleep is very important in a healthy lifestyle, and should be a top priority for everyone. Their publication, Sleep Health, serves as the "foremost publication for manuscripts that advance the sleep health of all members of society".

The Better Sleep Council is an online blog that was formed by bedding leaders and sleep experts who "represent a cross-section of the sleep products industry, with the noble goal of helping people start everyday with a good night's rest". They have compiled a lot of articles about getting the proper amount of sleep and listing a lot of interesting sleep facts. They even have a Sleep Better Quiz to help you find the best mattress with a personalized search.

Based on these sources, and my personal experiences, whenever the topic of napping and sleeping comes up, it seems that everyone talks about how they need more/better sleep. It's hard to find someone nowadays that is completely satisfied with their sleep schedule and the amount of sleep that they get. Prioritizing sleep is also a problem. If only we could all be like my dog, who gets enough sleep for everyone in my family.
